About Kouklamou
Κούκλα μου (KOO-kla moo) means “my doll,” “my beautiful girl.” It’s what your yiayia, your best friend and the man at the laiki all call you.
Kouklamou is a lifestyle and culture magazine for the modern Greek girl, whether you live in Athens, Thessaloniki, Laval, Astoria, Melbourne or anywhere in between. We cover beauty, style, food, traditions, language, love, family and all the funny, relatable things Greek girls know all too well.
The story
A little about how we got here
I’m Maria, the Greek-Canadian girl behind Kouklamou.
I grew up outside Greece, with my culture woven into everyday life through my parents. But in my twenties, I went back to experience it for myself—to get a feel for the place they had left behind and the life they’d carried with them.
There’s something special about getting to know your culture as an adult. You start to see your parents differently, too. The things you grew up with have a little more context. You get to discover which parts feel familiar, which surprise you and what being Greek means to you on your own terms.
Kouklamou grew out of that experience. I wanted a place to talk about the everyday side of being a Greek girl: the beauty discoveries, the food, the family commentary, the expressions that never quite translate and the traditions we’re still figuring out.
A place where a girl living in Greece and a girl growing up thousands of kilometres away might read the same story and think, “Wait, your mom does that too?”
